Recruiting: Michigan Is Gaining Ground On 2017 RB Eno Benjamin

2017 Wylie, TX (Wylie East) 4-star RB Eno Benjamin has been waiting a long-time for his coveted Michigan offer. The interest originally started last summer when he attended Michigan’s Dallas satellite camp. Benjamin grew even more interested in the Wolverines after a surprising 10-3 record in the 2015 season for Michigan and first year head coach Jim Harbaugh. Tuesday night was a huge night for Benjamin when he received an offer from Michigan.

“I was just speechless and excited when they offered,” Benjamin told me. “It took me a while to realize what happened, Coach Wheatley messaged me to call him, and when I did he told me that they offered me. When I heard that I kind of froze for a few seconds, I was just shocked. Later on, while I was talking to Coach Wheatley I texted my trainer David Underwood.”

“I love Michigan,” said Benjamin. “Over the years, I have become a big Michigan fan. Mainly because my running back coach, who is a huge Michigan fan. We always watch the games together, they’re somewhere close to the top!”

After his Michigan offer, the Wolverines jumped right up to his top list of schools. The Michigan offer was not the only reason Michigan moved up so suddenly. Michigan’s running back’s coach Tyrone Wheatley’s relationship and constant contact also has the Wolverines in good position.

“Coach Wheatley, that’s my man! He’s a former Michigan football player, so I am always open to what he has to say. When we talk on the phone our conversations always last a good twenty minutes. If it’s not Wheatley in contact with me, it’s Coach Partridge or Coach Mattison, all three of them are awesome coaches.”

As of right now, the Iowa Hawkeyes are currently the leader in Benjamin’s recruitment. However, the Wolverines have gained a lot of ground in a small amount of time.

“Iowa is currently my leader in my recruitment. They just feel like the best place for me as of right now. However, Michigan is making up a lot of ground and are near the top. Both Texas Tech and Arizona State are also sticking out a little bit.”

Following his Michigan offer, Benjamin scheduled an official visit to Michigan for March 8th. Benjamin will be accompanied by his high school running back’s coach, Matt Tietjen, who happens to be a huge Michigan fan and is reminding Benjamin to keep the Wolverines in the back of his head.

“I am expecting to be blown away by Michigan and all they have to offer. I can’t wait to see Coach Wheatley face-to-face. Specifically, I will be looking into my potential role on the team, the way I bond with the players and coaches, interaction with the program and university, and the education in Ann Arbor. Basically, I really want to see the team chemistry and how everybody gets along. I will be accompanied on my visit by Matt Tietjen, who is basically family to me and he is the biggest Michigan fan I know. He isn’t pushing me towards Michigan, but he is always keeping it in the back of my mind.”

Benjamin has a lot of connections to Michigan and a lot of people around him who like the Wolverines or had something to do with Michigan. That alone could really help the coaching staff land Benjamin.

“My private trainer, David Underwood, was a former running back at Michigan back in the day. He is also a huge Michigan fan and he was really excited when I told him Michigan offered.”

Benjamin will be graduating from high school early sometime in January and will be enrolling into the program he chooses as an early enrollee. However, he is no rush to make a decision, he wants to wait it out a little bit and go from there.

“I don’t have a set date. Whenever the time is right and it feels like the right decision, I will make my commitment. I will be graduating early, so I will have my decision before the start of 2017.”
