Over the weekend, Michigan hosted one of the top-rated players in the state of Ohio for the 2018 class in Westerville (OH) ATH/RB Jaelen Gill. This was the first time Gill got to see Michigan and probably not the last. When The Wolverines offered Gill back in January, The Wolverines immediately became a legit threat to the in-state Ohio State Buckeyes. Well, Michigan may have become even more of a threat to Ohio State after last weekend’s visit to Ann Arbor.
“I had a great time yesterday,” Gill said. “Spoke with the whole staff and Coach Harbaugh in his office. I got a campus tour and watched some practice! I liked how they took their time to sit me down with professors and talk about the academic program. It shows me that they don’t only care about me as a football player. They were all really cool. Coach Harbaugh was just telling me that Michigan is a very special place. After visiting, I now believe it.”
With this being Gill’s first visit to Michigan, he tried to soak up everything he was told and shown on his visit. Many things were appealing for him; however, Michigan’s strong academics and ability to graduate most of their players really stood out.
“I would like to either major in business or communications,” Gill told me. “Michigan can help me with becoming a better person and growing up as an individual. A degree from Michigan really means something, a lot more than other places. I would have multiple connections by the time I graduate from there and I would be set for life.”
Gill got to watch Michigan’s practice during his visit like most recruits who visit Michigan get to during this time. He got to meet with Jabrill Peppers, which pretty much every recruit wants to when they visit. Not to mention, but Gill really likes the way Michigan practices.
“They really get after it out there, it’s a very fast and up-tempo practice. It was just really impressive as a whole. I also got to meet Jabrill Peppers, which was cool. We talked a little bit, just kind of meeting each other and saying what’s up and things like that.”
The Michigan coaching staff is looking to add more speed and athleticism to the current roster. Gill would go a long way with helping to bring those two qualities at the running back position. The Wolverines don’t have a running back on their roster that is as fast and as athletic as Gill.
“They are recruiting me as a running back. They like that I’m a balanced running back and have lots of athletic ability and speed. They don’t have that on their roster. I got to talk to Coach Wheatley and we talked for about 15 minutes. He’s a great guy and someone people should look up to.”
During his visit, Gill got to have a one-on-one sit down meeting with Coach Harbaugh. However, it was not a conversation that you would expect. They did not talk much about football, recruiting or even Michigan. They talked about Harbaugh meeting the president and his baseball career.
“We talked about everything, from baseball, to meeting the president and his kids. He is a really funny dude I think. First he told me, he wished he was better at baseball and that he didn’t hit the ball out of the outfield his senior season because of some bad hitting lessons he got. I started laughing when he said that. The other thing was him meeting the president, he was really star struck and I think that is cool for someone with so much credibility to be star struck.”
