The Hurry Up
That’s the word that was simultaneously uttered by Michigan fans all over the world as they watched Michigan throttle Indiana back in late January in Ann Arbor.
Michigan dominated that game. Hell, Michigan may have brought Tom Crean close to tears. This wasn’t the Michigan basketball team guided by Trey Burke, Nik Stauskas, and the like. This was 2016-2017 Michigan basketball. A team that just about all were so close to giving up on. That 30 point victory against the Hoosiers seemingly made everything normal again for Wolverine basketball fans, until Michigan lost their next two, which included an inexplicable loss to Ohio State at home.
As has been the case all year, Michigan has talent and can be a great team when they want to be. The problem lies in that this team is one of the least consistent in the country. They’ve shown their great side in absolutely dominating performances against Indiana and Michigan State at home, and they’ve shown their bad side as well. Now they look to keep it rolling against the Hoosiers in a critical road match.
Unfortunately, I’m here to tell you that today’s game probably won’t be as easy as the one played in Ann Arbor. Michigan hasn’t won on the road all year long, and Assembly Hall is the place where they’ve had the worst success in trying to win. Since John Beilein has been in charge, Michigan has won ONCE in the Hoosier confines. One time. Additionally, that was against one of the worst Indiana teams in recent memories. The point we’re trying to get to here is that Michigan has NOT had a good time when they go to Assembly Hall. It’s one of the toughest environments to play at in college sports.
It’ll take a great performance from Michigan to go into Bloomington and pull out their first road win of the season. This is something we know they’re more than capable of doing. The question is, which Michigan team will show up?
What to Watch For
- DERRICK WALTON JR : Can the senior point guard and leader continue continue his great run of solid performances against the Hoosiers?
- IU’s JOSH NEWKIRK: The Indiana point guard has been solid from beyond the arc in recent outings. Can Michigan contain the senior guard?
- ZAK IRVIN: It’s no secret: Zak Irvin has been really bad lately. Can he find his groove in one of basketball’s craziest environments?
PREDICTION: Michigan 76, Indiana 70
