Post Christmas Edition: 2017 Best Guess Recruiting Class

Christmas is over and the festivities are underway in Orlando for the Under Armour All America Game with the US Army All-American Game set for January 7th. It’s time for The Wolverine Daily’s Post Christmas Edition of our 2017 Best Guess Recruiting Class.

This time around, we will be listing recruits currently committed as either “Hard” or “Soft” commits and targets that are not committed, but we are currently projecting to be in this class. Small Updates will be provided for all uncommitted targets.

1. QB: Dylan McCaffrey, Littleton (Valor) CO.

  • 4-star, #4 QB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 5 STAR

2. HB: O’Maury Samuels, Los Lunas (Los Lunas) NM.

  • 4-star, #21 HB, HARD commit (could get interesting down the line), TWD Rating: 4 STAR

3. HB: Kurt Taylor, Covington (Grayson) GA.

  • 3-star, #60 HB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

4. HB: Najee Harris, Antioch (Antioch) CA.

  • 5-star #1 HB, #1 Overall, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 5 STAR
  • Harris’ official to UM went about as well as it could go. The Najee to Ann Arbor hype is at an all time high now with Harris’ posting photos of himself wearing Michigan gear on Snapchat. Yup. That’s how deep people are looking into this recruitment. Regardless, we think Michigan has now done enough and are projecting the nation’s number one prospect to Michigan.

5. WR: Brad Hawkings, Camden (Camden) NJ.

  • 4-star, #206 Overall, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

6. WR: Tarik Black, Cheshire (Cheshire Academy) CT.

  • 4-star, #17 WR, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

7. WR: Donovan Peoples-Jones, Detroit (Cass Tech) MI.

  • 5-star, #1 WR, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 5 STAR

8. WR: Nico Collins, Pinson (Clay-Chalkville) AL.

  • 4-star, #14 WR, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 5 STAR
  • Michigan remains the leader for Collins, though it must be noted that SEC teams such as Georgia are coming on very strong and making things interesting. Collins will make his decision on NSD, so there is still a lot of time left in this recruitment.

9. OL: Andrew Steuber, Darien (Darien) CT.

  • 3-star, #46 OT, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 3 STAR

10. OL: Joel Honigford, Sugarcreek (Garaway) OH.

  • 3-star, #47 OT, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 3 STAR

11. OL: JaRaymond Hall, Oak Park (Oak Park) MI.

  • 4-star, #33 OT, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

12. OL: Kai-Leon Herbert, Ft Lauderdale (American Heritage) FL.

  • 4-star, #28 OT, SOFT commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

13. OL: Mekhi Becton, Highland Springs (Highland Springs) VA.

  • 3-star, #41 OT, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 3 STAR
  • This one is going be to interesting. Michigan has basically been slow playing Becton for awhile now to see what happened with their top targets on the OL. Now that Michigan has missed out on the likes of Isaiah Wilson, Becton joining the class is becoming more and more likely.

14. OL: Chuck Filiaga, Aledo (Aledo) TX.

  • 4-star, #14 OT, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 4 STAR
  • Michigan has been able to maintain their lead in Filiaga’s recruitment. Now it’s all about holding onto that lead in the home stretch. Filiaga is perhaps the most college ready prospect left on Michigan’s board and with the miss of the aforementioned Isaiah Wilson, Filiaga has become a must get for the Wolverines. Oklahoma and Nebraska round out the rest of his top three and though the Sooners have made a strong push, I expect Michigan to hold on here and receive Filiaga’s pledge.

15. OC: Cesar Ruiz, Camden (IMG Academy Fla.) NJ.

  • 4-star, #1 OC, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 5 STAR

16. DL: James Hudson, Toledo (Central Catholic) OH.

  • 4-star, #13 SDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

17. DL: Deron Irving-Bey, Flint (Southwestern Academy) MI.

  • 4-star, #9 SDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

18. DL: Phillip Paea, Berrien Springs (Berrien Springs) MI.

  • 3-star, #36 DT, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 3 STAR

19. DT: Donovan Jeter, Beaver Falls (Beaver Falls) PA.

  • 4-star, #10 SDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

20. DT: Aubrey Solomon, Leesburg (Lee County) GA.

  • 5-star, #2 DT, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 5 STAR
  • Michigan is now the team to beat in Solomon’s recruitment after once being seemingly ruled out after losing his commitment earlier this year. Georgia is always a threat, but Alabama and Clemson seem to be Michigan’s fiercest opponents in this one, and they are not going down without a fight. This one will be very close, but it is the belief of many that Aubrey wants Michigan and that could very well prove decisive.

21. DE: Luiji Vilain, Ontario (Episcopal VA.) Can.

  • 4-star, #8 WDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

22. DE: Corey Malone-Hatcher, Saint Joseph (St. Joe’s) MI.

  • 4-star, #18 WDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

23. DE: Kwity Paye, Warwick (Bishop Hendrickson) RI.

  • 3-star, #45 SDE, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 3 STAR

24. LB: Ben Mason, Newtown (Sandy Hook) CT.

  • 3-star, #29 ILB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 3 STAR

25. LB: Drew Singleton, Paramus (Paramus Catholic) NJ.

  • 4-star, #3 OLB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

26. LB: Josh Ross, West Bloomfield (St. Mary’s) MI.

  • 4-star, #9 ILB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

27. LB: Willie Gay, Starkville (Starkville) MS.

  • 4-star, #7 OLB, UM Chances: Excellent, TWD Rating: 4 STAR
  • Gay fell in love with Michigan after visiting and the Wolverines have been in the driver’s seat ever since. The hometown Mississippi State Bulldogs are making a strong push and will continue to do so up until NSD. For now, we expect this one to go Michigan’s way, but won’t be shocked at all if Gay opted for MSU.

28. LB: Jordan Anthony, Olney (IMG Academy Fla.) MD.

  • 4-star, #6 OLB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 5 STAR

29. S: J’Marick Woods, Florence (Florence) AL.

  • 3-star, #29 S, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

30. S: Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Detroit (Cass Tech) MI.

  • 4-star, #21 S, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

31. CB: Ambry Thomas, Detroit (King) MI.

  • 4-star, #11 CB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 5 STAR

32. Brandon Sebastian, Cheshire (Cheshire Academy) CT.

  • 3-star, #115 CB, UM Chances: Good (BC Commit), TWD Rating: 3 STAR
  • With Michigan seemingly falling out of it for Darnay Holmes and Elijah Hicks, Sebastian comes in as the next best option to fill in the last DB spot. Sebastian will visit Michigan in January and should flip to the Wolverines if the staff informs him that he is a take, which we believe he is at the moment.

33. Benjamin St-Juste, Montreal (Cegep du Vieux) Quebec

  • 4-star, #36 CB, HARD commit, TWD Rating: 4 STAR

JUST MISSED:

  • Jay Tufele
  • Elijah Hicks
  • Tedarrell Slaton
