Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan coaching staff love using their tight ends in their famous pro-style offense. With one tight end already committed to Michigan in the 2017 class, The Wolverines are in search for another tight end in this class. Well, Michigan may have found their second tight end in 2017 Cincinnati, OH (Archbishop Moeller) four-star Matt Dotson.
Dotson recently announced that he has three schools who are standing out and he will be choosing between those schools. Although, Penn State, Michigan, and Michigan State are his final three schools, it appears that this will be a Michigan State-Michigan battle.
“Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State are the schools I will be considering,” Dotson told me about his recruitment. “Those are the schools I like the most because they both utilize their tight ends and I love the feeling I have when I’m at those programs.”
The Wolverines are currently recruiting Dotson the hardest out of all three schools. He is also being recruited by both Jay and Jim Harbaugh. Even though he has a great relationship with the Harbaugh’s, Michigan’s use of their tight ends is standing out the most about Michigan.
“Michigan is currently recruiting me the hardest, they are in contact with me everyday,” Dotson said. “The Harbaugh duo, there is not a better two coaches that recruit together like that. I like how they use their tight ends. They travel six to every game and most of them play every game. Coach Harbaugh said they don’t believe in red-shirting. If there is a spot where they can use you they’ll put you in the game.”
Adding: “They want me to come in and be a Jake Butt style tight end. I feel like that is a very high honor to have. So if I come in, I’ll have my hand down and slot out in the open field. So a little bit of everything.”
Before the Moeller High School standout makes his commitment, he wants to visit all three of his final schools. In terms of a decision date, he currently has one and it will be a big one with a lot of viewers.
“I’ve already visited Michigan and Michigan State, I thought they were both great visits and I really enjoyed my time there. I did everything I needed to see there, my next visits will be just too get more comfortable with the programs. However, I will visit Penn State on May 21st, and I want to visit Michigan and Michigan State before I make my commitment. In terms of my commitment, I will be releasing a commitment video at The Opening.”
As of right now, I have no doubt in my mind that his recruitment will come down to Michigan State and Michigan. However, it appears like The Spartans have the slight lead over The Wolverines. The Michigan coaching staff is pushing hard for Dotson and that might be enough for Michigan to take the lead. In addition, Michigan will get one last visit from Dotson just like Michigan State. The Wolverines will have to roll out the red carpet when Dotson comes to town.
