Exclusive: Devin Bush Sr. “Has Not Heard From The Michigan Coaching Staff”

In Jim Harbaugh’s first year, he has hired a graduate transfer’s mother and a few high school coaches from top high school programs across the country. Well, it looks like Harbaugh might be hiring another familiar high school coach from a top high school program.

The Miami Herald reported on Wednesday, that Flanagan High School Head Coach Devin Bush Sr. is reportedly “on the verge” of joining Michigan’s coaching staff and his son, Devin Bush Jr., who is a Michigan freshman linebacker.

In the report by The Miami Herald, Bush Sr. described it as “hearsay” that he could be taking a coaching job at Michigan. The Miami Herald said there had been rumors about this all year.  Furthermore, the Wolverines do have some possible spots on the coaching staff. However, the job would have to be a non-assistant coaching spot; probably Michigan’s director of player personnel job, now that Chris Partridge has been promoted to linebackers and special teams coach. Michigan lost senior offensive analyst T.J. Waist to South Florida this offseason and their recruiting coordinator Erik Campbell left the program for a job as Connecticut’s receiver coach.

I did have a chance to talk to Devin Bush Sr. to see if the rumors were actually true. He told me the following:

“Actually, I had no idea there were reports going around saying that,” Bush Sr. told me. “I have not heard from the staff about a potential opening, but if they were to give me an opportunity, I would take it in a flash. As I said, I hope now with the speculation I could have an opportunity. It would be awesome. It would be an honor to work under Harbaugh.”

As it turned out, Bush Sr. had no idea that these reports were swirling about him potentially taking a job with the Michigan coaching staff. When I did tell Bush Sr. about the reports and everything going on, the former Super Bowl champion was very excited.

“I would really like the coaching staff to talk to me about those open spots,” Bush Sr. informed me. “It would be really cool if I could work at Michigan, I would love the opportunity. I know Michigan has lost a lot of coaches this offseason, I’d take Mr. Campbell’s spot if it’s still available.”

In fact, after Bush Sr. spent so much time with Harbaugh; with his son being recruited by the coaching staff very heavily and all that. Now, he likes Michigan a lot, and if the job was offered he would take it without a question. Mostly because the Wolverines currently have three incoming freshmen from Bush’s program at Flanagan: Devin Bush Jr., Devin Gil and Josh Metellus.

“For me, if I was offered the job, I would accept without a doubt. I simply could not pass up the opportunity to learn from Harbaugh. It would not be much of a problem for me to be honest. I mean all of my children are in college at Florida State, Michigan and UCF. It would be a dream come true to be a coach at Michigan with my son, Devin. Also, my former players: Josh Metellus and Devin Gil, who I consider my son’s would be up there to.”

After all it turns out that the report by the Miami Herald saying that Bush Sr. was “on the verge” of accepting a Michigan coaching job was false. He has not even been contacted by the Michigan coaching staff.

Note: Michigan has also reportedly offered the father of Michigan tight end Henry Poggi, Biff Poggi, a job on the coaching staff, per the Baltimore Sun a few weeks ago. But, he is considering offers from both Maryland and Michigan. In addition, last week, Prattville High School assistant announced that he would be taking a job with the Michigan coaching staff.
